WHY TINO PAI?
You might know why we named our Norseman 447 "Tino Pai", but if you don't and wonder what the name means to us, read on...
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
When we found our perfect boat, we wanted a name that expressed just what she means to us, also connecting her with New Zealand and our old life ashore. Andy's a Kiwi, as was our much-loved NZ Heading Dog, Pai, who we sadly lost in 2018.
This Norseman 447 is a perfect fit for us; in her design, the care she's had over her 40-year life, and in her readiness to cross oceans. After some initial research, we reached out to the Department of Māori Studies at Auckland University and confirmed that "perfect fit" translates into Māori as "tino pai". It was a no-brainer! As Māori is a contextual language, "tino pai" also translates into English as "very good". That worked for us too.
We also wanted a boat logo for our new life aboard that worked with the name and all it represents. Starting with the idea of a koru, we worked with a designer to build in elements of wind, sea and sail. After some tweaks the Tino Pai logo achieved all of that. We feel it works wonderfully for the boat, for us, and our life afloat.
